I don't recall ever being in love with a collection as much as I am with Acne's A/W 2012 display above... It's almost as though they created this collection for me. Clearly, I'm swooning over the lack of color... This collection is a great example of the importance texture/material has when combining black pieces. I am in love with the fur and leather combination. This collection is beyond inspiring.

As promised, a look that isn't entirely black! Though many believe that black and brown shouldn't be worn together, I'm an absolute fan of mixing the two... Especially when leather is involved. I love pairing a broad-shouldered jacket with tight jeans. It creates a great silhouette.

Yesterday was day one of my second term at Art Center College of Design, and I was at school from 9AM-10PM. It was exhausting to say the least. Regardless(!), I'm very excited of this term. Most of my classes require for me to shoot using 4X5 film, so I don't anticipate on releasing any new work until I have time to scan my film later on. I still have a lot of work I created last term that I plan on blogging, however. Expect many, many posts to come within the next 4 months. And thank you for all your continued support. It truly means everything.

It feels good to be back in Los Angeles and being productive. Despite how much I enjoyed my time off of work and school, I'm eager to get back in the rhythm of things. I cannot believe that winter break is already coming to an end. My visit in Ohio and Florida have been extremely short lived. However, I'm anxious to get back to school and work... My first term at Art Center College of Design is (finally) over. I cannot even begin to express how exhausting my life has been these past few months. Moving out onto my own, going to art school full time, working 30 hours a week, and balancing side projects has been an incredible undertaking... I feel as though I've more than earned a break! Thankfully I will be heading back home to Ohio on Tuesday morning, where I will be reunited with the most important people in my life. I can't wait.

This past week I finally got around to scanning some film that I've been turning in for class. I had a 35mm film class this term that required me to turn in 'daily visuals' every week. Ideally, I would have updated my blog with images weekly, but clearly my schedule has not allowed for that. Therefore I will try to dump a batch of photos every few days for the next few weeks. Stay tuned for much more routine updates!

P.S. Sorry for tricking you into thinking your screen is filthy! I didn't clean my film before scanning (but ended up falling in love with the imperfections that the dust added anyways).

Hello! Composing this blog post feels so foreign to me, as I've neglected to update for so long... but I finally found the time to do a style journal post, ironically in the midst of finals. My life has been in a state of complete chaos, juggling school and work. However, in a mere two weeks I will be on break and anticipate making up for my extended absence! Upon first moving to California, I woke up in the morning feeling empty and cold. I was waking up to a life that was foreign to me, which was haunting. My body was existing in Los Angeles, but my soul was at home 2,335 miles away. I didn't know how to divert my emotions towards positive energy, and found myself in a state of self-pity. I was warned that my heart would grow ill with homesickness, but chose to ignore it. I didn't prepare for the trauma it would have on my character and was stubbornly naive to the multitude of ways it would effect me. For quite a while it was destroying me. I was at war with myself. Fortunately, I experienced an epiphany before what I predict would have been me going off the deep end; and as a result, have been practicing a new morning ritual that I wanted to share with my readers. Every morning, with coffee at hand, I take 15 minutes to reflect on life. I establish what I want to accomplish during the next 24 hours, evaluate my self worth, remind myself of my roots, and most of all, give thanks for everything I've been blessed with in life. I have such an enormous wealth of support. It's incredibly humbling, and sometimes I wonder what I did to deserve it. But regardless, I am so entirely grateful. I don't honestly know where I would be without it. Thank you so much. And to add to my list of things to be thankful for, I am honored to announce that LOOKBOOK.nu chose to interview me on their website! I really have no words for how flattered I am... I cannot believe it's already been nearly three weeks since the last time I posted a look in my style journal! Time flies when you're relocating from across the country... It has been a whirlwind, to say the very least. I've been investing most of my time in hunting for a job before school starts on September 10th (and reading in the bathtub). While exploring Pasadena the other day, I stumbled upon this alley; immediately, I knew it was destined to be my routine shooting location. Thanks to my new friend Huntington, we took the opportunity to do some shooting last night before getting coffee. It definitely feels great to get back in the rhythm of things!

DON'T LET GO TOO SOON.

I have the tendency to be very reserved with my feelings. I don't take the time to express what I'm going through with others... To me, it signifies vulnerability. Almost as though I'm surrendering to my pride. Disowning my dignity. Not to mention, impending my problems on others. However, this past month has caused me to experience a slew of life changing epiphanies. I've learned more about myself, and others, than I typically would in the course of several years. It was overwhelming at first: the emotions I was caving in to. I've never previously allowed my emotions to control or dictate my life. It was new to me. I've always ignored what I was feeling. After all, I'm far too cold to feel. Or so I told myself. I was put on this Earth as stubborn as a mule. I doubt that will ever change.

When I began allowing myself to experience the very emotions that once haunted me, I began learning from them. Vulnerability revealed a manifestation of feelings I once purposely ignored. I began appreciating things I never before acknowledged, let alone understood: the importance of family and friends, the wealth of memories, the value of faith. The society we live in has a way of corrupting what is of actual importance; of value. Success is the portrait of importance for most of us. We are selfishly pursuing a life geared towards correcting this "void" of fulfillment. It is about our well-being, our happiness, our success. However, we are foolish to a key component in achieving those things: love. Receiving, but more importantly, giving love. How was I able to neglect that for so long?

I moved from a small town in Ohio to a big city in California, chasing this "dream" I had for myself. Little did I realize, I would've never been capable of going forth on this journey if it wasn't for the loving support of my friends and family. The pages in my journal would be blank if it wasn't for the memories I share with those people. I wouldn't even have been able to initially make this decision if it wasn't for my faith... A lot of my priorities have since changed. Before now, I put the priority of my existence and my goals before the well-being of others. I was oblivious to the fact that I could never fulfill the aspirations I created for myself without their love and support. And so I created this blog post as a promise to myself and them. "If we deny love that is given to us, if we refuse to give love because we fear pain or loss, then our lives will be empty; our loss greater."

...Hello! I bet you're very upset with me right now. I know, how dare I neglect updating you on my travels. Shame on me! But please, allow me to explain: I've honestly had no time to even open my laptop until yesterday... Between driving, eating, moving into my new house, eating, exploring Los Angeles, eating, getting lost, and eating, I just haven't had the time to update my blog! I didn't intend on uploading this many photos in one post, please forgive me. These photos were taken at various locations between Ohio and California (well, most of them at a Chinese restaurant we ate at outside of Vegas). Erika and I didn't take too many other photos along the way, due to the fact that we were pressed for time. Not to mention, the dessert grows monotonous rather quickly.

It's hard for me to believe that tomorrow is August 1st. I've been mentally preparing myself for this month since March. At the time, it felt like this moment would never come. Time has a way of escaping us, doesn't it? Speaking of escaping, it appears all remaining traces of color have escaped my wardrobe. However, I can't say the lack of color bothers me. In fact, I am hoping to make the absence of color rather permanent. Maybe it's just my black and white view on life. A view not to be confused with anything synonymous of depression. I've been so incredibly stressed lately. What's terrible is the fact that I can't even pinpoint what's causing the stress. I've always dealt with stress and anxiety, though I've never been able to figure out what exactly triggers it. Stress causes me to sleep recklessly, bite my nails excessively, struggle with acne, binge eat, and work out religiously. As soon as I have "down time", I begin to stress; at the same time, however, I oftentimes stress because I have no "down time". I long for vacation, but at the same time, fear being unproductive. Clearly, I just don't make sense. Regardless, my goal is to create a balance. I must achieve this goal before I move, or else things could get ugly. And I'd rather things be pretty. No one likes ugly things.

Like I said, I'm in love with these glasses. I haven't worn my contacts since I bought them. They add so much character to whatever I'm wearing, and can adapt to a handful of styles. Above everything, they are timeless. Best investment ever. As for the entire look, I drifted back into my ~comfort zone~ of black and white. To some, that may be a disappointment. To me, it's pure bliss. To think that there was a time in my life where I wore almost entirely orange (I was very confused at the time, clearly) seems very strange to me. I can't help but wonder what caused a revelation in my tastes... Something leads me to believe that is was my horrendously detrimental junior high experience. Or, perhaps, I'm just a drama queen.

Yesterday I picked up these new Ray-Bans. I was desperately in need of new prescription glasses (you should've seen my old ones), and have been wanting Ray-Bans for ages. Now that I finally have a pair, I'm sure I'll be wearing them in nearly every post... With that being said, the glasses didn't stop me from going for another grungier look. With summer, my style becomes much more casual and involves much less layering. As a result of that, I have been wearing tank tops far more often. I would love to own a few more polos; however, my budget won't allow it presently.

A few days ago I visited Malabar Farm with Erika and her family. It was relatively cloudy that afternoon, but as soon as we were leaving the sun decided to come out for a beautiful sunset. This outfit is a little more casual for me than normal. However, I've been trying to convince myself that less is more, especially with the warmer weather. In other news, my eyebrows resemble caterpillars in these photos.

MENSWEAR COLLECTION: BURBERRY PRORSUM FALL 2011

Despite the fact that everyone seems to be excited for spring and summer, I have found myself dreaming of the fall. This may sound ironic, as I come from an area where the winters are very long and cold. Even though warm weather caters much more conveniently to my lifestyle, it puts quite a burden on my wardrobe. With that being said, I'm anxiously awaiting fall for three-quarters of the year... I've never been a big fan of the spring/summer, especially when it comes to menswear. This may be the result of a lack of layering largely because of the warmer weather. If you haven't noticed, I tend to layer a lot (oftentimes too much, I'm afraid). Regardless, I know that I'm putting my butt at risk of being hung over Mr. Krabs' fireplace (I really hope you get that reference) due to the fact that I am terribly out of season, as usual, with this post. However, I couldn't resist sharing this beautiful collection... Burberry never fails to keep me compulsively lusting over outerwear.

I love the unique fur collars within this collection (especially the "jaguar mink" fur found throughout). Apart from that, I cannot help but swoon over the double-breasted goodness... My love for double-breasted jackets is comparable to a pre-teenager's love for gum chewing privileges during middle school (it's all I've heard my sister talk to her friend's about recently). Which reminds me! I've made the resolution to stop biting my fingernails. I'm a long time 'nail-biter' (ever since I can remember, actually), but I've recently converted to 'gum-chewer' in order to trade off my unnatural craving for keratin (what nails are composed of, I've leanrned) for the less appetizing taste of sorbitol, maltitol, natural and artificial flavors, caffeine, xylitol, niacinamide, titanium dioxide, glycerin, soy lecithin, calcium pantothenate, sucralose, taurine, maltodextrin, refined glaze, carnauba wax, pyridoxine hydrochloride, riboflavin, blue #1 lake, calcium silicate, cyanocobalamin (more commonly known as gum. Who invented this sinful treat?). I would be proud of this accomplish if the Easter Bunny would have brought me gum that maintains it's flavor longer than it takes to get another piece ready for when the current piece's flavor dissipates... Maybe I am just bitter and experiencing a nail-biting withdrawal.

It's incredible how easily I can get off topic. That is why I choose to type less in my posts. No one deserves to suffer through my ramblings... except the friends of mine that pretend they're listening while in reality they're focusing on cleaning themselves (read: cats). If you've read this far, I apologize!

Recently I discovered a website dedicated entirely to mens accessories! As a (obvious) fan of mens accessories, I was excited to find an online store stock-full of gentleman-ly goodies. To start, Brighterman has a great selection of bow ties and skinny ties! My heart was immediately won over...

Amongst everything else, Brighterman also has a handful of perfect circle scarves. I wear a scarf more than half of the year (now you know what to buy me for Christmas), so I was especially pleased to find so many in one place.

I usually have a hard time adapting to spring fashion. By that I mean I have a hard time wearing any colors apart from black/gray/white/brown. The weather here in the Midwest is unbearably inconsistent. While there may be warm temperatures for a few days, a cold front never fails to sweep through unexpectedly. With that being said, just as I was adapting my wardrobe to (what I believe to be) warm weather, it decided to snow today. Therefore, I was forced to throw on this parka. I wonder when I will be able to go sleeveless without the threat of a snowflake attacking me.

I'm absolutely in love with the ASOS Black collection. I swear they read my mind (but not my wallet, unfortunately) when designing all the scoop neck, mesh, and loose fitting pieces. What you see here is just a fraction of all the perfect items from their collection. I could only dream of owning these clothes. I'm most fond of the loose fitting tanks/tees paired with fitted outerwear. And I must say, I'm really into the mesh/sheer trend this season! Are you as marveled by this collection as myself?

Like I mentioned in my last post, my blog will continue to be on a small hiatus until I have it completely ready to reveal to everyone. I'm working with a close (internet) friend of mine, completely overhauling everything. That includes the layout, the content I upload, the actual title of the blog, as well as many other new, exciting things. In the meantime, I will still be uploading different outfits to LOOKBOOK and CHICTOPIA. I'm very anxious to show everyone what I have been up to, and I have a lot of ideas that I am ready to put to life! Stay tuned, and thank you for your continued support.

I cannot believe we are in the midst of the holiday season already. It seems like last week I was enjoying the summer in Alaska. Time absolutely flies.

Thursday afternoon I headed down to Columbus to shoot with this excellent group of art students. I've never really attempted to do a group photo shoot, but variety will greatly improve my portfolio. At the same time, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to begin a street style section on my blog. Most of my posts are travel/visual/style journals, and I've been wanting to add more content; as a result, I will from here-on-out be doing street style posts. Hopefully this will encourage me to photograph more people! Also, big thanks to those who helped in the shoot (I'll properly credit you very shortly!).

There is only a few things about cold weather that I am fond of:

Drinking hot beverages: including hot chocolate, apple cider, cappuccino, coffee, etc
Wearing layers
Wearing scarves

With that being said, during the Fall/Winter months I tend to consume a lot of coffee, wear a lot of jackets, and acquire a ton of scarves. Scarves are perfect for not only keeping your neck warm, but also adding a unique touch to whatever you may be wearing. I wear a lot of dull/neutral colored clothing so I try to use scarves/hats as an outlet for more vivid colors and patterns. Unfortunately, to buy a new scarf at the store, you have to be willing to dish out at least 10 dollars, but sometimes up to 20 (and I've actually seen them cost more than that!). If you are on a tight budget like myself then you would not find yourself in the situation to pay that sum of money for something that is so simple to make at home.

As you know, I thrift all my clothes. Rarely I will splurge on some items from H&M, but typically everything I wear is thrifted. When I say everything I wear is thrifted, I am referring to my jackets/cardigans/shirts/scarves/hats/shoes/pants/bags/socks/etc. This time of year is the perfect time to be on the prowl for scarves at consignment shops! I always find an abundance of them, and they usually go for a dollar or two each. Apart from prefabricated scarves, you can also look at materials. Most thrift stores have a section where they sell blankets and fabrics. The scarf that I am now going to show you how to make was originally a flannel blanket I recently got for 50% off at the local Volunteers of America.

The colors and pattern were exactly what I have been looking for in a scarf. Not only are they very Fall-like, but they are also very classic and timeless. I'll have this scarf for years.

To start, I sprawled the blanket out on the floor. This blanket was a little smaller than average. It was the width of my twin bed, but slightly shorter in length. After laying the blanket on the floor, I folded it in half to find the center. From there, I made a marking and cut with scissors a straight line dividing the blanket in two (like shown above). From there, I did the same thing with each half. Eventually I had 4 pieces of the identical length x width. Two of the pieces were left with the fringe on one long side, so I decided I would use those two pieces for a scarf of their own. The remaining two pieces were also made into a seperate scarf.

In order to create length, which will consequently add to the mass of the scarf when worn, I sewed two ends of the pieces together. I lined up the fringe and then folded the end of one piece back while laying the connecting piece on top of it. While pinching the two together, I busted out a needle and some red thread. I am by no means an experienced sewer. I am, however, rather crafty. Regardless, it does not require being crafty or experienced to do this sewing procedure (I promise)! I simply sewed from one end to the other, than came back to the starting point, tied a knot, and voila.

When sewn, the scarf looks like this. This, of course, would be the underneath.

When flipped over, you get this nice seam. You cannot even see the seam when wearing the scarf, unless you manifest your time into scrutinizing. It's not even viewable in the image below.

In total, this DIY project was extremely easy. Anyone could do it, including the men who think they are unable to sew. The end result was worth it and looks nearly identical to what you would find at Urban Outfitters or Forever 21. Not to mention, I also ended up with two scarves when sewing the remaining two pieces (the second scarf will make a perfect gift for my best friend!).

SUMMER STYLE GUIDE 2010

As warmer weather approaches, many individuals find it hard to maintain their style. Less layering, and less clothing in general, often times can be a burden when trying to express your style. If you are a victim of the aforementioned burdens, then you're at the right place! In the following guide I will visit upon the following tips/points:

1. How to transition your wardrobe.
2. Summer specific clothing items.
3. Accessories...
4. and more!

Keep in mind that this style guide is mostly geared toward guys. Overall, I'm giving pointers for guys that wish to extend their style beyond the normal cargo shorts and graphic tee.

I. TRANSITION YOUR WARDROBE
If you are in anyway similar to me, your style is heavily influenced by your lacking budget. For those that cannot afford to purchase a new wardrobe each season, there is one viable way to 'update' what you currently have. Three words: DIY OR DIE. If you wish to still wear your other season-specific clothes when that season cycles around again, be more choosy as to what you want to alter. Here are some ideas to work with:

Cut-off denim: If you are an owner of more than 3 pairs of jeans, you should have no discretion in altering at least one pair. Determine what length you prefer (I actually prefer an inch above the knee), mark with chalk, and then cut! Try making the cut look more aged with some fringe. Another option would be to cut the length longer, and then fold up the shorts for a cuffed short look. Both are very sensible in my opinion.
Sleeveless shirts/tank-tops: Another very easy DIY project that allows you to utilize your old clothing and make it more summer appropriate. If you are the owner of several plain or graphic tee shirts, it's very plausible to create a whole new look out of them just by making them sleeveless, or turning them into a tank top. Doing this is not very hard at all, and I suggest googling a method that suits the look your going for. If you want a more in-depth method of how I personally do it, please email me!
Customized tees: Another easy way to create an original look with old clothes is to create a print or design on them. This obviously works best with solid color clothes. The best way I've found is to create a stencil with thick paper and an x-acto knife. If you want a more official look, print out what you want to have on the shirt, then cut out the text. Remember, it doesn't always have to be text... Be creative!
Acid washing: Acid washing, particularly on blue material, provokes a very summery look to anything. You can try acid washing denim jeans, colored tees, cotton button-ups, etc! Remember bleach is permanent, so have a plan as to what you are doing.

For all DIY projects I suggest doing some research online beforehand. I've found google and youtube very helpful, but the DIY forum on lookbook is also a good source of information! Don't forget the examples above are not the only DIY projects that work well in the summer!

II. SUMMER SPECIFIC CLOTHING
Summer brings with it an opportunity to wear various distinct clothing items. As for guys, it's surprisingly easy to not conform to the stereotypical board/cargo shorts and graphic tee. Here is some ideas for clothing directly correlated to summer:

Tank tops: Being a big fan of tank tops, I may be biased in saying that tank tops are the perfect item for men in the summer. But in my defense, I doubt there is a guy out there that would disagree with me. Tank tops are timeless, and as a result, you don't have to worry about being out of style when wearing one. Solid tanks are great, but for this summer season, be sure to pick up a horizontally striped one for that 'nautical' look. the great thing is, they work with skinny jeans, board shorts, cut-off jeans, you name it!
Boat shoes: Although boat shoes look great year round, they shine during the summer when they can fulfill their real purpose as a comfortable slip on shoe, perfect for the beach, boat, or stroll through town. Leather is generally the way to go here, but I've seen canvas knock offs that look good as well. Like tank tops, they go with almost anything!
Various shorts: If you live anywhere that cycles through 4 seasons a year, you know very well that there is only one legit season for shorts, and it's summer. I for one would not wear shorts during the winter, so come late spring/summer, I'm dieing to throw some on. Unfortunately, guys typically do not know how to wear shorts properly. Depending on your body type and appearance of your legs, the cut length of your shorts can vary. I personally prefer my shorts directly above my knee, or an inch above. Shorts that reach more than an inch below your knee look trashy in my opinion. Apart from the length, the style of shorts matters as well. Cargo shorts have a bad reputation in my book, as they are typically worn by the high school jock or weekend Dad. With that said, stay away from them! Solid shorts of all colors and cut-off denim is your best bet.
Short sleeve shirts: I commonly only wear long sleeve shirts until summer, so like shorts, I'm always itching to break out some short sleeves come June. You may be wondering why I consider a short sleeve shirt exclusive to summer. Well, in other seasons, most men, including myself, only wear short sleeves layered with long sleeve attire. In the summer, this is not necessary! Collared/button-up short-sleeve shirts are definitely a summer exclusive style, and quite timeless at that. No cardigan or blazer required! Loose neck tees conveniently look great by themselves as well.

Though there is plenty of summer exclusive items, don't undermine small amounts of layering. For example, blazers, cardigans, and light jackets still go great regardless the season. Just be careful when picking out your outfit in regards to the temperature that day. Perspiration = fail!

III. ACESSORIES AND MORE
The obvious accessory during summer is sunglasses. Whether you're out of school for the summer, or just enjoying the season while being an adult and working (I'm sorry), sunglasses are a must! Have you ever seen the goon that wears sunglasses inside during the winter (perhaps someone that suffers from a bad case of seasonal confusion)? You aren't that person and you've been waiting all winter to break out your sunglasses, amarite? Well now that your wait is over, let's review some great sunglasses styles:

Wayfarers: In the past years wayfarers have been generated into a fad, but I've always considered them timeless. That is, the typical black-framed Ray-Bans. Luckily, along with the overrated bandwagon of hipsters that began to prefer them to other sunglasses, many different styles are now available. I'm a fan of most, but don't be a statistic by wearing the bright neon ones offered at PacSun or other retail stoes. Stick with classic and neutral colors such as black, gray, turtle shell, etc!
Aviators: Like wayfarers, aviators are also timeless in my opinion. Even though many women wear them nowadays, I feel like they suit men so much better. The thin frame and polarized lenses... Perfection!
Futuristic/Gaga-esque: Since Gaga's debut, futuristic sunglasses have been steadfastly gaining po(o)pularity. If you need inspiration, just take a gander at a few of Gaga's music videos! You have the vintage/round ones, the large shield ones, and the abundance of other over-sized kind. I can't pull them off, but don't be afraid to try them on yourself! I think they look great on some people. More so on girls.

Another great summer accessory to compensate for the lack of layered clothing is hats! Despite wearing hats all year round, a good head accessory in the summer can set off what would normal be a casual outfit. I'm a sucker for a good straw fedora, as well as different colored bowler hats, and thin slouch beanies. Again, hats may be a stretch when the temperature doesn't want to cooperate.

IV. ADDITIONAL NOTES/FOOD FOR THOUGHT
After reading what I've typed so far, I hope your inclined to progress your wardrobe! Before you set forth, though, allow me to point out some additional information:

Nautical is very in this summer season (like previous summers). Horizontal stripes, navy colored shorts/pants, boat shoes, blazers, anchor jewelry, etc! You can find a lot of inspiration for this on lookbook.nu.
Denim is also very in. LOTS AND LOTS OF DENIM. (of course, it's always in for me.)
Don't be afraid to wear things not included in this post. Be yourself! I always respect when people generate new ideas and trends.
Don't feel like you can't dress up during the summer. Long sleeves, blazers, and skinny jeans are still very appropriate depending on the occasion. Just have a plan for the humidity, when it strikes.
Since you'll already being doing a lot of DIY projects, don't forget to thrift some items to alter! If you don't have any good shirts or jeans to DIY, thrift! Especially solid tees. No excuses!
Make your summer style universal. Don’t conform to one trend. Experiment with different combinations of clothing from the ideas I mentioned above.
Be confident! You are your own person, and therefore entitled to your own style! Go out there and be confident of yourself.
